My sister and her family used to own a powerboat. I was sort of excited when they took me out a couple of times on it. I was really confused about the lifejacket procedures, and everybody else in the boat just kind of picked theirs up and tossed it to the side, as if "yeah if I fall overboard someone will throw it to me and I'll magically don it while flailing about."

I knew that this would not be a possibility for me (or anyone else, for that matter) and I did not try to stand my ground against their beloved customs, but it made me rather sullen during the entire trip that I felt I had taken unnecessary risks, just so I wouldn't be "That Guy".

Nobody fell out of our boat, but our captain did lose his baseball cap once or twice, and it was sort of hilarious how he flung the boat around and a couple of other boaters would converge to retrieve the cap and return it to him out on the water. Now I suppose any "man overboard" situation would've been treated with similar gravity. It was also a nice warm California summertime in the San Diego Bay. But I am thankful that we didn't have any occasion to test our rescue procedures.
