> This compares to a new natural gas plant, around $65 per megawatt hour, or a new advanced nuclear reactor, which runs over $80. Offshore wind is among the sources of new power generation that will cost the most to build and operate, at $88 per megawatt hour, the EIA said in July.
This is an accurate reflection of numbers the EIA published in 2025, but for advanced nuclear those numbers reflect the eventual price of what a new technology might hopefully reach once it is proved and then matured by building lots of them. The prices are for new tech coming online after 2030 where the FOAK (first of a kind price) would undoubtedly be higher, assuming they even actually get built. Previous attempts in the US have been cancelled after price estimates doubled.
Offshore wind in the course of being built in America today is already hitting those price points (not accounting for recent Trump sabotage) and is globally well understood and maturing.
In China offshore wind is cheaper than coal as of 2024 and they have half the world's installed capacity, 50GW with 40GW installed in the last 5 years.
> THE FACTS: This is false. The endangerment finding was adopted in 2009 by the EPA after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that greenhouse gases are air pollutants that can be regulated under the Clean Air Act
