It's "effective" for purposes if the DMCA, which means circumventing it is a crime.

"Felony Contempt of Business Model", to be read with the same cynicism as "Theft by comparison-shopping."

piracy being considered theft is so dumb. Do they really think the people pirating would have payed if not given the option to have it for free? I only consume the media because I'm not paying for it, not instead of it. Do they consider not buying their thing theft? because I'm not paying for it regardless but for some reason one counts as a loss

Oh no, it's so much worse than that, the craziness happens even when there's zero piracy.

Suppose you buy a printer. One day it stops working because it says the paper is the wrong size. A sensor has broken, and this happens to everyone eventually and there are no replacement parts.

Fortunately, there's a trick to make it ignore "wrong size" paper, which is it's ever so lightly "encrypted." You modify the device you own so that it work again. You tell others the trick.

Oops, somehow that's a federal crime. Now your blog is taken down and in they want to fine/jail you, all because you wanted your own damn property to actually work.
