> The iOS 27 Extensions feature plays a key role in Apple’s new strategy. The feature allows users to install their preferred third-party AI chatbots and run them within Siri. Gurman says the feature will have a dedicated section in the App Store, enabling Apple to generate revenue through its 30% commission.
That is amazing. I hope they don’t manage to find a way to make this suck (they probably will with special entitlements) for home developers, because I’ve been longing for an integration to just be able to talk to my AI Assistant like I would talk to Siri if it was useful.
That said, I’m confused what’s so hard for them in just powering Siri with an LLM. Even a 1b model running on-device would do a better job than whatever the fuck they currently have (I’m serious, you can even do simple agentic coding with one). Or hell, GPT-2. And voice assisstant demos are available by the thousands online.
