Sounds like they should have replaced Matthew Prince with an AI. The AI would probably have been smart enough to understand that you don't shrink your way to being a great company. The AI would have realized that you take the people who are being made redundant, and task them with solving new, harder, problems. The ones AI can't solve. Have them launch whole new products, spin up entire new divisions, etc. Let the humans use their creativity to do great things...

“The vast majority of those we laid off last week were measurers,” he wrote. He defined “measurers” as those in middle management, finance, legal, internal auditing, and revenue recognition.

He's being very measured in that statement. I would suggest there's a bit more to it but rather taboo to bring up. I would suggest quite a number of positions were artificially created to meet quotas for immutable human attributes and AI was a great way to eliminate many of those positions without risking legal fallout. I can only fault them for creating the positions in the first place. They had to know at some point the artificial positions would have to be cleared out thus further disrupting peoples lives more than helping them as they have to make an unplanned move once again.
