Someone who trains in the same kung fu club as I was born and raised in Iran, but moved to Belgium around the turn of the millennium. I hope this will make it easier for them to contact their family in Iran.

Anytime I see anything posted by an Iranian on Instagram, there are always people commenting "how much did you pay regime for white sim" or something like that (white sim refers to users who get internet access without any filtering). I know multiple people in Iran who bypass restrictions using modern VPN solutions such as wireguard + xray for proxy.

One wonders if they've been able to upgrade to the latest generation of Chinese surveillance gear during the hiatus

They don't need the latest gear; Edward Snowden exposed the US doing this at the expert level in 2013.

The question is, does Iran have access to the same backdoors?

Unlike Israel / United States, who invented (forced) the backdoors into the technology, Iran wouldn't have direct access to this.
