Because the lab tutorials are using Rust and the device drivers are "Written in Rust™" which is trendy in 2026.
This is the only explanation, but clearly almost no-one is interested in writing their own device drivers in 2026 after more than 5 hours of this post with less than 10 comments.

I found it interesting, and a nice break from yet another llm related post. Why would it be out of place here?
Writing device drivers isn't sexy like TheLatestFramework™ but are an important part of computing.
Because the lab tutorials are using Rust and the device drivers are "Written in Rust™" which is trendy in 2026.
