This is a loyalty test, just like the oversized Florsheim shoes. It's also a way to condition people to follow his orders. Do some nonsense now, you're more likely to run a violent takeover for him later.

He’s not an idiot. A major reason he keeps winning is people underestimate him, seeing only the clown makeup and not the calculating manipulator underneath.

It’s a loyalty test. If you follow the insane order you are loyal.

Or, and I’m just tossing this out here, or he’s an actual idiot and democracy was always a race to the bottom?

All political systems have failure modes, and shallow populist demagoguery is one of the failure modes of Democracy. The US IMO is not a well-functioning democracy and hasn't been for a while.

The failure modes of autocracies are more obvious: bad kings, low information decision making, incompetent bureaucrats, and no way to remove them peacefully without waiting for them to die.

Depends on what sort of intelligence you're talking about. Trump is a con man, and is very adept at manipulating certain types of people. Outside of that, though, he's clearly an idiot.

Idiot is the leader of the most powerful country in the world, has a loyal following, including on this very site, and has been shown to throw dangerous tantrums.

Pol Pot flunked out of a prestigious university. But he obviously had enough loyal followers to implement an anti-intellectual genocide. Quite a success. Must be smart. His followers' opinions must matter.

          > His followers' opinions must matter.

"Matter" is unfortunately correct both then and now: the word does not imply objective correctness.

Whelp, looks like I’m THE ENEMY.

That said, from his position I’m absolutely certain it looks super-intelligent… come to think of it, I’m kind of surprised the shibboleth isn’t “mega-hyper-giga-plaid-intelligence”.
