Why do we need shit to be delivered this quickly?

I can have my groceries delivered same day via multiple parties. I can have many things from Amazon on my porch the next morning without resorting to aerospace. FedEx can get pretty much anything else to me within 2 days (sometimes involving aerospace).

Where is the demand for this coming from? Does HN feel a burning urge to consume something so essential that it must be delivered now? What the hell is this? A hankering for some snack crackers and a Lego set? Is the demand genuine? I can't help but feel like sometimes this technology is bad on purpose just to antagonize. Like 7000K LEDs being sold to other humans. Evil exists in many formats. Technology companies bring hyperscale to the activity of spreading misery.

Same principle as AI - replace the people on your payroll, keep more profits.

I think it’s probably more about reducing or eliminating the expense of human delivery drivers. Even if they need humans monitoring the drones, they’ll farm that out to Asia or Africa on the cheap and still make their money. The important thing is to make more money, there is never enough and anything and everything can be sacrificed for it.

Most deliveries aren’t urgent, but I can see the appeal if it’s fast enough to replace a trip to Lowe’s to buy some part you need now for a project. Also, meal delivery is time sensitive. Amazon always wants to deliver things faster.

But I think the idea is that shipping by drone will eventually be cheaper than a delivery truck, not just faster.

Socially inhibited nerds than think we need it bc it's the future and "people just don't get it".

Just bc you can do it doesn't mean you should. But some people don't get it.

Isn't the driving force for drone ports that it's delivered with more automation, fewer humans? i.e. cheaper and still just as fast.

      It's a different evil.
