Ever since Carl Sagan's Cosmos Johannes Kepler has been my favorite scientist. He had some crackpot ideas but saw the error of his ways and reached good conclusions. I enjoyed Terence Tao's description of how he discovered his laws of planetary motion. He had insights into lots of areas. Generally a good guy (even if there were flaws).
